Program
Description:
If you’re
moving classroom
content to online
– it’s
a whole new world
of instructional
design! The synchronous
environment requires
a different perspective
on common training
activities such
as discussion,
flip charting,
breakout groups
and lecture. In
addition, the
materials (Facilitator
guides, participant
guides and slides)
that support the
synchronous classroom
are quite different.
This three-session
certificate will
explain the design
approach of a
synchronous class,
the creation of
synchronous-appropriate
materials, and
provide a variety
of concrete examples.
This course is
NOT platform or
topic specific,
its goal is to
help you design
compelling courses
and course materials
to ensure successful
synchronous class
deliveries. Taken
as a stand-alone
certificate or
as a supplement
to InSync’s
Synchronous Design
Certificate, Instructional
Design for the
Synchronous Environment
teaches how to
design a synchronous
class in-total
and how to create
the materials
that support it.
Session
1
- S-ISD
(Synchronous
Instructional
Design)
– the
approach to
instructional
design - when
the delivery
medium is the
synchronous
environment
- is entirely
different from
what we “traditionally”
do; this session
will outline
the overall
concepts of
appropriate
design for virtual
learners
- Slides
- Slide design
and usage in
the synchronous
environment
Session
2
- Participant
Materials
– when
moving from
classroom based
training to
the online environment,
most individuals
do away with
the participant
guide; in fact
the participant
materials become
the second most
important contributor
to success in
the online classroom
- Involving
the Online Learner
–
when not designed
properly, synchronous
training sessions
are nothing
more than presentations
from “talking
heads.”
This session
will identify
ways to involve
learners in
the learning
process even
when they are
separate by
time, geography,
and language
Session
3
- Facilitator
Materials –
It is too easy
for facilitators
to fall in to
“lecture
mode”
when teaching
in the online
environment,
UNLESS the design
of their facilitator
materials reinforces
the process
of learning
(rather than
teaching); the
first half of
this session
will provide
four examples
of facilitator
guides and identify
how each is
designed to
pull the learning
from participants
rather than
pushing content
at them
- Facilitating
Learning Outcomes
–
the certificate
program will
end with a discussion
of the four
learning outcomes
that training
programs are
designed to
achieve and
offer specific
design suggestions
for achieving
each

Nanette
Miner, Ed.D.
Dr. Nanette
Miner is
a nationally
known author
and consultant
in the field
of workplace
learning.
As an instructional
designer
for over
two decades,
Nanette
is unique
in that
she is able
to design
curriculum
for all
delivery
mediums
including
the traditional
classroom,
asynchronous
and synchronous
eLearning,
or a blend
of all mediums.
She is the
President
and chief
consultant
for The
Training
Doctor,
LLC (www.trainingdr.com)
and managing
director
of the non-profit
organization,
The Accidental
Trainer
(www.TheAccidentalTrainer.com),
a support
group for
individuals
who have
found themselves
thrust into
the role
of training
from other
lines of
business.

Target
audience:
Individuals
whose job responsibilities
or future responsibilities
include designing
synchronous training
materials within
their organization.
