What’s the difference between virtual learning, blended learning, and hybrid learning?

Virtual, hybrid, and blended learning differ in where training happens and how it’s delivered—understanding each model helps organizations design the right learning strategy.

  • Virtual learning describes where training happens: it takes place entirely online, through live virtual classrooms (VILT) or self-paced platforms.
  • Hybrid learning also describes where learning happens: it includes both in-person and remote participants engaging in the same session at the same time.
  • Blended learning describes how learning is delivered: it mixes asynchronous (self-paced) and synchronous (live) elements—regardless of whether the live portion is virtual or hybrid.

That means both virtual and hybrid learning can be part of a blended learning program, depending on how the content is structured and delivered across time.

Key differences among learning models:

  • Virtual Learning (Where): 100% online via virtual classrooms or self-paced eLearning.
  • Hybrid Learning (Where): Simultaneous in-person and remote participation.
  • Blended Learning (How): A structured mix of live and self-paced methods that support flexible, scalable learning.

Why it matters: Blending learning methods allows organizations to meet diverse learner needs, optimize resources, and align delivery with goals—whether the sessions happen online, in-person, or both.
