Virtual Learning
What is the difference between a webinar and virtual instructor-led training?
Webinars are typically one-way presentations, while virtual instructor-led training (VILT) is interactive, learner-centered, and built for engagement.
A webinar typically delivers information to a large audience with minimal interaction—like a lecture or broadcast. It’s great for sharing updates, thought leadership, or overviews, but it doesn’t offer the active learning needed for behavior change.
VILT, on the other hand, is designed for learning. These sessions are structured around two-way communication, peer collaboration, and active engagement using tools like breakout rooms, chat, polls, and guided discussions. VILT sessions are usually smaller, require skilled facilitation, and focus on application, not just attendance.
Key differences between webinars and VILT:
- Webinar: Broadcast-style, limited interaction, large audiences, primarily informational.
- VILT: Highly interactive, small-group, facilitator-led, focused on learner engagement and participation.
Why it matters: Choosing the right format impacts outcomes. For deep learning, VILT provides the environment learners need to connect, apply, and retain.
