What is a learning management system (LMS)?
A Learning Management System (LMS) is a platform used to deliver, organize, and track virtual, hybrid, and blended training programs.
An LMS serves as the hub for eLearning content, course registration, assignments, assessments, and analytics. Instructional designers use it to structure programs and launch pre-work or follow-up activities, while facilitators and learners track progress, access resources, and complete tasks asynchronously. A strong LMS supports a seamless blend of self-paced learning and live sessions.
Common LMS Features:
- Course Hosting: eLearning modules, PDFs, SCORM content, videos.
- Assignments & Assessments: Quizzes, reflections, surveys.
- Tracking & Reporting: Completion data, learner progress.
- Communication Tools: Email notifications, discussion boards, learner feedback.
Is an LMS Required for Virtual Training?
Not always—but for large-scale programs or blended learning, an LMS improves structure and scalability.
