What is an icebreaker in virtual learning, and why use one?

An icebreaker is a short, intentional activity that builds connection and reduces anxiety to set the tone for participation in a virtual classroom.

Icebreakers foster early engagement by helping learners feel seen, heard, and safe. They check that learners can use platform tools (like chat or polls), ease people into conversation, and preview the session topic. A good icebreaker connects emotionally, intellectually, or environmentally—aligning with the InQuire Engagement Framework®.

But icebreakers shouldn’t be used just to fill time. Avoid them when:

  • They feel disconnected from the session topic or audience.
  • Learners are already comfortable with each other and eager to dive in.
  • Time is limited and learning objectives are tightly packed.

Benefits of Icebreakers:

  • Emotional Engagement: Builds psychological safety and community.
  • Intellectual Engagement: Introduces concepts in a low-pressure way.
  • Environmental Engagement: Ensures learners can access and use the tech.

Best Practice: Always explain why you’re using the activity and how it connects to the learning purpose.
