How much lecture vs interaction should there be in a virtual session?

Virtual sessions should prioritize interaction over lecture, aiming for learner engagement every 3–5 minutes to sustain attention and learning.

Too much lecture in a virtual classroom leads to passive learners and poor retention. Unlike in-person settings, where attention can be managed through presence and body language, virtual learning requires deliberate engagement. Plan for interaction—polls, questions, chats, and application activities—as the core design element.

If you must include large blocks of lecture, pre-record that content and assign it as pre-work. That way, learners can absorb it at their own pace—and live time can be used for questions, clarification, and application.

Tips to Encourage Interaction:

  • Use breakout rooms for deeper discussion and practice.
  • Ask open-ended questions to spark conversation.
  • Incorporate chat, whiteboards, and polls to involve everyone.
  • Reinforce key points with short recaps and learner contributions.

Remember: If learners are just listening, they’re not learning. Design sessions that require them to think, contribute, and reflect.
