What’s the difference between virtual learning, blended learning, and hybrid learning?

Virtual and hybrid learning describe where training happens—fully online or both in-person and remote—while blended learning defines what and how learning is delivered by mixing live and self-paced methods.

Virtual learning occurs entirely online, typically via live virtual classrooms or asynchronous courses. Hybrid learning refers to the “where”: a learning environment where some participants are in-person and others join remotely, often simultaneously. Blended learning describes the “what and how” — combining self-paced content (like videos or readings) with live sessions, whether virtual or in-person. Importantly, hybrid learning can be a form of blended learning when it mixes modalities and delivery methods. Understanding these distinctions helps organizations choose the right strategy to meet learner needs and business goals.

Key Differences:

  • Virtual Learning (Where): Entirely online delivery.
  • Hybrid Learning (Where): Simultaneous in-person and remote participation.
  • Blended Learning (What & How): Combination of self-paced and live learning modalities.
